GMOs and the right to choose

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs have been a major controversy in the food industry for years. Recently there have been more and more people supporting the efforts to rid the world of GMOs as more studies are being done and there has been more talk about the negatives. The fact simply is the regulation on these foods is not existent. Therefore in most of the genetically modified products that are consumed today, none have had the adequate amount of testing to be considered safe for the public to ingest. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine recently stated that genetically modified foods have not been properly tested and pose a serious health risk. There is more than a just a coincidence between genetically modified foods and the adverse health effects that have been starting to become more and more evident in the world’s population. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine also called for physicians to advise their patients to avoid eating genetically modified foods. Since GMOs were introduced into the food industry in 1996, chronic diseases and food allergies have doubled in numbers. World renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava goes one step further with his evaluation of the issue. After reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, he concludes that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans. It has been said that due to the significant impact genetically modified organisms have on children, they have been called “experimental animals.” It is extremely dangerous for children to ingest GMO food products. GMOs can significantly influence the development and growth of children due to the large vast amount of malnutrition these products are promoting. In addition, GMOs can make it much more likely for children to become ill, again due to malnutrition. Genetic engineering alters genetic codes of the DNA in organisms by splicing in other genes from other forms of life, including other plant forms, insects, bacteria and even viruses. This as result creates and dangerous mutation of what we refer to as food.

          The Root of the Problem

The main reason there is no regulation, and therefore widespread genetically modified organisms throughout America is the affiliation these products have with the government and major companies. Most of the research that is being done is conducted by large corporations such as Monsanto. Their main aim is to increase sales of pesticides, herbicides and oil-based fertilizers that are becoming more and more outdated. In addition to their pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer sales, they are the main seller of genetically modified seeds in the United States. The problem with this is Monsanto has a major impact on government decisions involving genetically modified regulation. For years, Monsanto employees or those who have an affiliation with governmental officials. The most recent example is with President Obama. He has recently appointed Michael Taylor as Food Czar to his cabinet. Michael Taylor was a vice president and chief lobbyist for Monsanto prior to his cabinet position. Monsanto has the constant aim to own the patents for all the food crop seeds in the world. They are making large success in forming a monopoly in their business by influencing many rules and regulations regarding genetically modified foods in government. Is this really who we want in the White House making decisions and having great impact on what is set as a standard for the United States? If this continues to be run the way it is, soon Monsanto will be in charge of crops and seeds globally. Michael Taylor’s most recent policy basically states that there is no different between genetically modified organisms and regular organic food. He believes that since Monsanto says they are safe they must be and that’s good enough for America. Recovered documents from biotech companies have proven that there has been very little testing done on genetically modified organisms, and the testing is very often done improperly. Results and tests are being doctored to tell the public what they want them to hear and nothing more. Nothing is being done because governmental officials are on Monsanto’s side.

There needs to be something done about this problem that is constantly evolving in not only the United States, but the world. The only way this can be done, is if the public stands up and does something. People need to knowingly boycott these genetically modified products in order to make a difference in the way they buy and consume food. There needs to be a stand taken to have a choice in food. People need to be informed about what they are eating, and should have the right to easily be able to choose between organic and genetically modified foods. The public needs to stop the hidden lies from Monsanto and other corporations, and demand the truth about what we consume.
